Interview with Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber - November 12th, 2021
This is an interview with Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber about his ties to developers and his plans for South Beach's world-famous Ocean Drive district.
It is a follow up to this audio recording: https://anchor.fm/only-in-miami-show/episodes/Miami-Beach-Mayor-Dan-Gelber-discusses-Ocean-Drive-PAC-with-former-Mayor-Phillip-Levine-e18vbiu
Miami Book Fair author Jean Becker wrote The Man I Knew: The Amazing Story of George H. W. Bush's Post-Presidency
Grant spoke with Miami Book Fair author Jean Becker about her upcoming appearances at the Miami Book Fair 2021 at Miami-Dade College's downtown Wolfson campus this November 15th.
In the first stretch of her book “The Man I Knew: The Amazing Story of George H.W. Bush’s Post-Presidency,” Bush's post-presidency Chief of Staff Jean Becker makes clear how concerned Bush was about leaving a legacy of public service after departing the White House. He wanted to behave in a proper fashion and adopt the right perspective. He even wrote a sort of instruction manual for himself, listing his values and priorities.

Miami Book Fair authors Craig PIttman and Paula Stone Williams
Grant spoke with Miami Book Fair authors Craig Pittman and Paula Stone Williams about their upcoming appearances at the Miami Book Fair 2021 at Miami-Dade College's downtown Wolfson campus this November 14th-21st.
Pittman is author of The State You're In: Florida Men, Florida Women, and Other Wildlife whose Miami Book Fair appearance will be available on demand Tuesday, Nov. 16.
For more than 30 years, investigative journalist and New York Times bestselling author Craig Pittman has chronicled the wildest stories Florida has to offer. Featuring a selection of columns that have appeared in the Tampa Bay Times and other outlets throughout Pittman’s career, this book highlights just how strange and wonderful Florida can be.
But first, Paula Stone Williams explains the deep insights from her new book As A Woman: What I Learned About Power, Sex, and the Patriarchy whose Miami Book Fair appearance will be in person on Sat. Nov. 20, a 4 pm in Miami-Dade College's Wolfson Campus, Room 2106.
As a father of three, married to a wonderful woman, and holding several prominent jobs within the Christian community, Dr. Paula Stone Williams made the life-changing decision to physically transition from male to female at the age of sixty. Almost instantly, her power and influence in the evangelical world disappeared and her family had to grapple with intense feelings of loss and confusion.
Feeling utterly alone after being expelled from the evangelical churches she had once spearheaded, Paula struggled to create a new safe space for herself where she could reconcile her faith, her identity, and her desire to be a leader. Much to her surprise, the key to her new career as a woman came with a deeper awareness of the inequities she had overlooked before her transition. Where her opinions were once celebrated and amplified, now she found herself sidelined and ignored. New questions emerged. Why are women’s opinions devalued in favor of men’s? Why does love and intimacy feel so different? And, was it possible to find a new spirituality in her own image?

Growing up in the Forever Wars and People Love Dead Jews - Miami Book Fair Authors
Grant spoke with Miami Book Fair authors Jerad W. Alexander and Dara Horn about their upcoming appearances at the Miami Book Fair 2021 at Miami-Dade College's downtown Wolfson campus this November 14th-21st.
Jerad W. Alexander wrote Volunteers: Growing Up in the Forever War. His appearance at the fair will be available digitally on demand starting Friday, 11/19. The book takes readers deep into the "kingdom"—the insular realm of military families growing up on bases around the world—and vividly evokes a childhood infused with all things war. The minute he is old enough, he enlists, like his parents and stepfather and grandparents before him, and he, too, lands in Iraq as an eager Marine, desperate to see some action. Soon, though, he comes to realize he is fighting a lost cause, a skirmish in the ongoing war on terror that is really about a fruitless display of American might. Everything Alexander has based his life on, has obsessed over, he realizes, is a mirage.
Dara Horn wrote People Love Dead Jews: Reports from a Haunted Present which is currently the #1 selling book on the history of Judaism on Amazon. Her appearance at the fair will be available digitally on demand starting Thursday, 11/18. The book is a startling and profound exploration of how Jewish history is exploited to comfort the living. Dara Horn has been publishing penetrating essays since she was a teenager. Often asked by major publications to write on subjects related to Jewish culture—and increasingly in response to a recent wave of deadly antisemitic attacks—Horn was troubled to realize what all of these assignments had in common: she was being asked to write about dead Jews, never about living ones. In these essays, Horn reflects on subjects as far-flung as the international veneration of Anne Frank, the mythology that Jewish family names were changed at Ellis Island, the blockbuster traveling exhibition Auschwitz, the marketing of the Jewish history of Harbin, China, and the little-known life of the "righteous Gentile" Varian Fry. As Horn explores the (not so) shocking attacks on the American Jewish community in recent years, she reveals the subtler dehumanization built into the public piety that surrounds the Jewish past—making the radical argument that the benign reverence we give to past horrors is itself a profound affront to human dignity.
